One Word Motto

Many people in the world today try to find true happiness and sometimes this can be an uphill battle in every day life. From my experience as a supervisor who deals with employees every day, there is only one thing I need to remember to make life and work easier. There are so many tips and tricks to guide you, that in time it is hard to focus when adversity comes your way. In the hustle and bustle of life we can sometimes get caught up in day to day activity and we lose track of what is really important to us and the life we lead.

One simple and always effective tool in interacting with those around you, is to Smile when ever possible. It is a hard task to accomplish but can be the most rewarding with very little effort. It is amazing how much a simple smile can change the attitude of you and co-workers. Even family members can benefit from the joy a smile brings. In this time of trouble and bad news from the media, we need to be more dependent on our family and friends to weather the storm. Find strength in the home and family.

Throughout world history the family unit has been the basic tool for survival and support. Sometimes a family unit can be in the form of a small community or tribe. We can read the history books and see that a close association with a family group or community has been the foundation of a successful life. At home we have family members, and in business we have co-workers. Both go hand in hand to help us be happy in day to day life. We must remember to value and cherish these people around us and be a spark of light to help make our world a better place.

So what is the one thing that is the top of the my list for true happiness? I have found one word
that has been my goal to always strive to achieve and so far has helped me tremendously. That word is Respect. If everyone were to remember this one word and learn what is the true meaning, we would have a near perfect world. If you can discover the true meaning of respect, all other areas of interacting with others will fall into place. My favorite movie may sound corny but it has helped me understand what is most important in life. Pollyana is a simple movie but has a profound message that I have come to treasure. If you look for the bad in people you shall surely find it. Why not look for the good instead. Respect goes hand in hand with this ideal.

True respect is not a two way street. If you show and exhibit respect to those around you, will find that you will lose the feelings of despair or unhappiness. If you demonstrate respect to someone, you do so with the idea that you will receive nothing in return. I know this is a hard concept to grasp but it is the true meaning of respect. It would be like giving a person a gift and expecting them to give it back when they are done. Even if you find someone is treating you in a bad way or they are difficult to be around, find it in your actions and attitude to still show them your respect. You will find it hard to believe, but in time that person will become infected with your frame of mind and will learn to respect you as well. Sometimes they might not want you to be aware, but in the back of their mind it will become a seed.

Respect and love are actually very closely related. If you strive to show true respect to those around you with no strings or conditions, you will find it hard to harbor feelings against them. In a sense you will be showing signs of caring or love for those around you. This is a great tool to bring people closer together and you become a beacon of light shining to those who are near you. So always look for the good in people and soon you will find it hard to be unhappy, and life will be a better place. If you practice the thoughts and actions of exhibiting true respect, you will find that in time, you will not be as concerned about what is wrong with those around you, but have a happier outlook in life and make the world a better place. Sometimes it is a constant struggle to remember to live by this one word motto, but I have found great success and happiness by striving to live by this goal. Try for yourself and see what you can accomplish for your everyday work and life.

Could You Have an Identical Twin?

Identical Twin – Identical twins are born when a fertilized egg, or zygote, splits in two. Because the egg is fertilized by one sperm cell, and it is the sperm cell that determines the sex of the child, identical twins are always the same sex.

The two children share 100% of their DNA, meaning that the most complex DNA test could not tell the difference between the two. There are differences, however, in the phenotype, or physical expression of the DNA, that helps people distinguish between one identical twin and the other. Though they share the same genotype, they have different teeth and finger prints, for example.

Half- Identical Twin – Half- identical twins are born when the egg splits prior to being fertilized, and the two new cells are fertilized by two different sperm. The siblings share 25% of their DNA.

Monoamniotic Monochrionic Twins – Depending on how long after conception the egg splits in two, identical twins may share the same yolk sac, chrionic sac, and amniotic sac. Twins that share all three sacs are known as monoamniotic monochrionic twins, and there are several health risks that are associated with this situation. There is an increased risk of tangling with an umbilical cord, because the identical twin not only has to worry about her own cord, but also that of her sister. The twins have a greater risk of TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome) where the placenta is unevenly shared – thus, one gets too much blood and the other gets too little.

Mirror Twin – Some 25% of identical twins are mirror twins. They have mirror image finger prints, one is left-handed and the other is right-handed, and their hair spirals in opposite directions.

Conjoined Twin – Commonly called Siamese twins, they are monoamniotic monochrionic twins who never completely separate. Thus, when they are born they share some part of their body. Often their hips or shoulders, and more rarely their heads, are connected. The majority of conjoined twins are mirror twins. Several successful surgical separations have been performed, allowing the twins to live normal lives.

Fraternal Twin – Far more common are fraternal twins, who come from two different eggs fertilized by two different sperm cells. They share 50% of their DNA just as other siblings born at different times do.

Twins of Two – When two separate eggs are fertilized by two different men, twins of two are conceived. The children are genetically half-siblings and share just 25% of their DNA.

One hundred years ago, the average parents of twins would have had to guess whether they were identical or fraternal. Nowadays, in addition to sophisticated medical equipment available, parents can have DNA tests done to determine what type of twins their children are.

His Most Famous Painting (Chatterbox Falls) – Robert Genn

Robert Genn specialized in many techniques of painting, such as silkscreen painting, oil, and watercolor; he though created this famous painting using acrylic on the canvas. Chatterbox Falls is located at the far end of Princess Louisa Inlet in Canada. This secluded location was of much interest to Genn, as the environment consists of vividly palpable beauty, intrigue, and mystery. He captured this charismatic location ingeniously onto the canvas. Where the clear water of “The Chatterbox Falls” ‘Symbolize’ tranquility and peace, the sudden light of the sun helps us remember the joys of living.

Robert always stuck to a particular pattern of design and tradition. His use of colors though bright or muted at places, added a sense of obscurity to this masterpiece, measuring 30″ x 34″. His bold brushstrokes and sharp indentions in “The Chatterbox Falls” depict a sense of strength and stability, the lush green vegetation in the painting, ‘Symbolized’ the sign of life. The snow peaked mountains, the overlapping mist, and lichen-roofed rocks were perfectly portrayed on the canvas. Genn’s tremendous representative of talent and artistic brilliance, this work is filled with small rivulets and has cascading mountains encompassing it. The painting captures the true picture of this place, as it depicts the water of Chatterbox swelling amidst the lush and gorgeous ecosystem. This painting was auctioned and is now a part of a private corporate collection.

“The Chatterbox Falls” has a particular serenity about itself. In the words of Robert Genn, “It was a cosmic privilege to be amidst this natural splendor and portray this onto the canvas.” Robert Genn, after the creation of “The Chatterbox Falls,” leveraged his fame by creating similar landscape paintings of the west Coast and the Rocky Mountains. Robert’s works allowed the viewers to be a part of the divine natural cathedral and experience its divinity, mystery, and sheer brilliance. “The Chatterbox Falls” continues to enthrall audiences through its simulated capture of natural beauty, with all of its essence, onto the canvas.

Keeping Ferrets As Pets

The Ferret Odor

Perhaps one of the most important things you should know about ferrets is that they do have a musky odor to them. Some people find the odor to be quite offensive, while others feel it is not too overpowering or troublesome. Therefore, it is a good idea to spend some time holding a ferret and generally being around one in order to determine how you feel about the odor.

Even if the ferret has been descented, you will still smell the odor coming from its skin glands. So, don’t let anyone talk you into believing that you can completely eliminate the odor, because this simply is not true. Similarly, frequently bathing a ferret will not remove the scent. In fact, it may make the odor stronger because baths will dry the ferret’s skin out and the skin glands will produce even more oil.

If your ferret has not been descented, you may want to consider having it’s glands removed since you may encounter foul odors. Just as with skunks, ferrets have scent glands that will release a strong odor if it feels threatened. Although the odor of the ferret is far milder than that of the skunk and washes away easily, it can still be quite unpleasant to the owner. For that reason, most ferrets sold as pets in the United States have had their glands removed.

Keeping Ferrets as Pets

Despite popular misconception, ferrets are actually domesticated animals that have been kept as pets for hundreds of years. Nonetheless, you may have some problems purchasing a ferret where you live because the laws where you live may not recognize them as domesticated pets. Therefore, you will need to check into regulations in your area in order to determine whether or not you can own one as a pet.

Before purchasing a ferret, you should also become familiar with their little quirks. For example, the name “ferret” is derived from a Latin word that means “thief,” and you will quickly discover why ferrets were given this name. Ferrets have a tendency to take the items they find laying around the home and hiding them somewhere new, so be sure to keep valuables out of reach!

Ferrets are also very playful pets, but most do sleep for about 18 hours a day. They are most active from dawn until dusk, but they do have a tendency to change their sleeping patterns in order to fit within their owner’s schedule. It should also be noted that ferrets, which generally live six to eight years and have poor eyesight. But, they compensate for their poor eyesight with a sharp sense of hearing and smell.

The bottom line is that ferrets can make great pets. Just as with any type of pet, however, it is important for you to learn as much about these furry little creatures as you can before you make a purchase. That way, you can be certain you are purchasing the right type of pet for you.

The Different Types of Buddhism

Buddhism is a dharmic religion and form of spirituality that revolves around certain beliefs and practices – all of which are aimed at bringing the participant closer to Buddhahood – the highest level of spiritual awareness. However, because the religion has gained followers in several different parts of the world (mostly in Asia), the way that Buddhism is practiced has split into several different sects. All of the Buddhist sects believe certain things in common: all accept Buddha as their teacher, use the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path in their teachings, and believe that Buddhahood is the highest attainment.

Most scholars divide the different types of Buddhism into three sections. The first of these is Southern Buddhism, or Theraveda Buddhism. The word Theraveda is a word in the Pali language (thought to be spoken by the Buddha) that means “the Doctrine of the Elders”. The biggest aim in the Theraveda practice is to use meditation to train the mind, and to encourage freedom of the mind from suffering. This freedom from suffering will allow you to reach the greatest spiritual goal – Nirvana. Theraveda Buddhism is the only surviving school from the earliest years of Buddhism, and it is mostly practiced today in Sri Lanka, Laos and Cambodia.

The second type of Buddhism that is mentioned is Eastern Buddhism, also known as Mahayana Buddhism. This sect not only teaches the Pali Canon (which is the religious text of Theraveda Buddhism) but also includes additional texts and beliefs. In order to reach Nirvana, Mahayana Buddhists believe that a person must practice universal compassion, which is the altruistic quest of the Bodhisattva to attain the “Awakened Mind” of Buddhahood. Mahayana Buddhism also has a level of mysticism involved. This type of Buddhism is practiced in China, Korea and Japan, as well as parts of other Asian countries.

The third of the different types of Buddhism is Northern or Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism is also considered to be a type of Mahayana Buddhism, but it also embraces other teachings, texts and practices that are not seen in the Eastern type of Mahayana Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhism is also sometimes called Tantric Buddhism or Vajrayana. This type of Buddhism uses both the Mahayana and Theraveda scriptures, as well as a number of Buddhist Tantras – all of which are aimed at attaining Buddhahood in just one lifetime instead of requiring many reincarnations.

While all of the different types of Buddhism have the same goal and same basis for their beliefs, the way that Buddhahood is obtained varies from sect to sect. It is important to understand the way that each sect works before choosing to practice a type of Buddhism.

Wish You Were Here President Bush!

Instead of my already planned vacation to St. George Island on Apalachicola Bay, Florida, thanks to President Bush’s economic stimulus package I have now extended my time down on the “forgotten coast”.

Last week I received a letter from the IRS informing me that my wife and I would be receiving a check from the government sometimes in May. I immediately called the real estate broker from which I had rented a house on the island for a week and added a few more days to the stay. I hung up the phone with a feeling of patriotism, having done my duty in helping to stimulate our economy!

Springtime fishing on Apalachicola Bay is always good. Pompano, redfish, trout, flounder and mackerel live in these waters and always bite aggressively in the spring. The wonderful thing about fishing is that you can relive those exciting moments, like last year when a big fish broke my line and headed to South America. I love memories like that!

While I’m fishing this year, I’m sure I’ll take a few minutes between strikes to mull over this free money experiment from our President. Polls today have predicted that many would save the money they receive. If that happens, the economy will not be stimulated and this project will fail.

If everyone is as happy as I am spending the money, it will be a huge success, though I can’t help but wonder that if the $300 I’ll receive will help the economy so much, why not send me $3000? Wouldn’t that help the economy more?

This year I hope the fishing will be as good as last year when I hooked 2 three pound Pompanos on the same line at the same time. I had two hooks tied onto my line about two feet from the bottom, with a two ounce triangle weight tied to the end of the line.

I had just thrown the rig into the Gulf when a school of Pompanos swam by, striking at anything that looked like food. The shrimps attached to the hooks on the end of my line were just too appetizing to pass up!

If you’ve have ever caught two fish at once you know how crazy the fight to bring them into the net is going to be. I had six pounds of fish on my line and one wanted to go to the right and the other to the left, leaving me with a bent rod and a question of exactly what was on the end of my line.

From the difficulty I was having in bringing them onto the beach, it felt as if I had hooked onto an armored car that was trying to take my rod and me to Mexico. It wasn’t until I had brought them into a few feet of the shore that I saw there were two of them. I’m sure there’ll be just an exciting time this year when I spend extra time on the beach, thanks to Mr. Bush. I’m beginning to like him more all the time!

While sorting out my tackle box in anticipation of my trip south, I have another thought about this stimulus program. Why did they have to send out letters to all America’s tax payers telling us that they’re going to get money from the government in May 2008?

I’m no economist, but as far as I can see, the only thing that will be stimulated with this expenditure is the government. Why do they need to spend, according to Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, about 45 million dollars on mailing notices that we’re going to get money from the government?

They could just send my money down to the coast with my new friend George. That way he could make sure the economy would get its boost and he might even catch a fish!
