The Value of One Page

Winston Churchill was asked how long he would need to prepare a speech. Churchill asked how long he had to speak. He was told 2 hours. “I can do that immediately.” When asked about a 10-minute speech, he replied, “In that case, I should need a fortnight to prepare.” Business people must filter out the unnecessary and trim their documents into brief but concise statements. Here are a couple of steps to help:

1. Prioritize information

2. Target your audience.

3. Focus attention on supplying key information

4. Use active positive wording.

5. Compress date without losing important content.

6. Never begin with a blank piece of paper.

Never begin with a blank piece of paper? You will be more concise, creative and effective if you use a template. Most feel that they lose creativity in using a template but this is not so, creativity is typically increased when you follow a pattern. Look at Mindmaps for example. Jotting down ideas in a random order and than linking them together, is there really randomness to the pattern. Not really, it is method in itself. In the book, “Made to Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath, they make an excellent case for using a template to promote creativity, not hinder it. Worth the read, just for that thought.

You are more effective if you commit to something in writing. Writing is the key to clear thought. And if you can get it all on ONE PAGE, you will stand a greater opportunity getting your message across. Jefferson did!

Procrastination – If it Looks Like a Duck!

Well, that kind of thinking might be all-right for the wise-old heads sitting in their rocking chairs but it’s not very useful if you’re trying to run a business.

The ‘duck’ in this case are the behaviours you do that make it look and sound like you are ‘procrastinating’ and therefore you MUST BE a ‘procrastinator’. Judgement passed, case closed.

Of course, this doesn’t actually help you get into action. In fact labelling yourself actually makes things worse. My name is Douglas Cartwright and I coach people how to untie their psychological ‘knots’ and become more effective.

I’d like to offer a few perspectives on what might be happening when we ‘procrastinate’, and suggest some resources to help.

1) Some people take the view that the brain is always attempting to do something ‘positive’ for us (although this may not necessarily be ‘good’ in moral terms) and protecting us from danger is positive. This danger may not be the fear of getting physically hurt but it may be that of being exposed to psychological hurt – the fear of failure, and what others will think.

2) Susan Jeffers who wrote the famous Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway says that the basic fundamental fear behind all fears is that of not being able to cope.

One of the reasons we feel we can’t cope is overwhelm and although the advice to break things down into small steps is well-known, the reason for doing it is not. Basically, anything perceived as a threat activates the fight or flight response – so the solution is to take tiny steps that don’t wake the fear centres. The book One Small Step can Change a Life is simple and excellent if you think this is your problem.

3) If you’re coming from a place where you believe work has to be hard then you could be avoiding the ’slog’ and ‘grind’ of getting it done. The Now Habit by Neil Fiore offers an excellent and radical solution to this – schedule all your fun time first! It also suggests you only work for ½ hour blocks and when you’ve done that, you can mark it on the blank spots on your schedule AND give yourself a reward. If you like something different and other time management books haven’t worked for you – you could do worse than try this.

Last week, I spent 15 solid hours developing a new website and a product for people who think they procrastinate but actually have a different issue. (Btw – I used methods from both of the above books – schedule fun, then do one tiny step at a time)

The product is actually a psychological pattern called ‘the intentions into action pattern’ and I’m a little nervous about giving the vanilla version away for free. Why?

First, because it’s a powerful part of my coaching armoury and, second, because you actually have to use it to get the benefit – it doesn’t work as just an ‘idea’.

Our bodies need to be trained to take action and sometimes the channel between ‘thinking’ and ‘doing’ gets rusty. So we think until the cows come home but nothing happens! That’s disuse – not procrastination!

Have you ever poured one of those miracle limescale cleaners down the toilet or a pipe? Isn’t it amazing how they clear away the encrusted scale and you can see the pipe?

This pattern enables you to create an implementation ’superhighway’ so that when you get a great idea you can begin the process of translating it from mind to muscle.

And isn’t that where all ideas begin – in the mind?

The guy who originally developed this pattern is now a millionaire from integrating and applying wealth principles to his life.

You may not be yet, but one small step can change a life!

Write Articles That Sell

Now write down a brief, one-sentence explanation as to why you chose each one for the list. With a little bit of research and embellishment you pretty much have your first article.

Now keep it going, write down how each of these topics help the article to sell. Get it? Keep asking questions, drill down further and further into these topics.

Tips To Improve Your Quality

1. Write a teaser for your article. A teaser is like a summary or a little blurb that gets your reader’s attention and makes them want to read the rest of the article. You should use this teaser when your article gets picked up by searched engines, again, it will grab the reader’s attention. Sometimes you do not have to write a teaser, for instance the first sentence in this article will make a fine teaser.

2. Keep a lot of space between your text. The reason for this is long blocks of text tend to overwhelm a person. This will make it easier on your readers’ eyes and get them to read the entire copy.

3. Another important point is to keep the article short (300 to 400 words is good). Besides keeping your articles short, don’t forget to break up the text into paragraphs. Don’t worry, you can still get in plenty of content while keeping it short.

4. Forget the adjectives, do not worry about style, people interested in business articles are in it for the information. They do not want to spend their time reading your content all day long, even if it is good. They want the article short and sweet, and as fast as possible. So, keep it short and include many line breaks and paragraphs.

5. Practice, practice and practice. Real successful writers got that way with a steady work schedule. So, if you want to see the best results possible, get a timer and set it for an hour or whatever is comfortable for you and write. Article marketing takes time, you need to practice. Do not worry, in time the process will not only speed up, it will almost feel effortless once you get yourself into the work flow.

6. And finally, do not forget the keywords. Frequently your reader is searching for that one specific word or term, and do not forget to put as many as you can in the title.

Follow these 6 tips and you will be well on your way to writing quality articles. Articles that people will want to read. The more people read them, the more traffic for you.

Write a Will

You can simply create your own Will by writing it out. There is no need to see anyone for legal advice if you do not want to do so. Although you are preparing a legal document, there is no requirement to have it prepared by anyone. You can do it yourself. You do not even need to produce a typed or printed document because even a handwritten document can be perfectly valid so long as all of the legalities are adhered to. You might benefit from a little help if you are going to use this method. Read the next tip to found out where.

The first place that you might think to look is on the internet but I would caution you about this because it can be an unreliable place to seek legal help. The international nature of the internet means that you could easily follow the wrong rules for where you live and invalidate your Will. A better approach is to purchase a book about how to write a Will. This is much more likely to be a sound and reliable source of information. On line book shops are a great place to find the right book because they often have reviews to help you choose something appropriate. You could even go and see if the book that you want is available from the local public library and that will save you even more money. This avenue will help you with writing your Will but would you like to make it even simpler? Go on the next point to find out how you can do just that.

Did you know that you can buy special kits on the way to write a Will? Well, you do now! They are specially written to help you produce the document you need. They help you through all of the technical side of things and even have a printed form that you can complete. Admittedly, these forms are likely to only be of assistance where there is a very straightforward situation but they might do the job for you. You probably really should get advice if there is a large estate involved, a complicated family situation or if you have children who are under eighteen years of age and need to be provided for. You will almost definitely want the reassurance of advice if you are appointing guardians for children because this is a really critical matter and you might be surprised to learn that the courts may not automatically appoint who you would wish as a guardian if your Will is invalid for any reason. These kits can be very useful, whether you use them alongside a book or not, but neither of these first two options allow you to speak to someone and ask questions. Would you like the comfort of speaking with an expert and receiving the benefit of some advice? The next tip allows you to do so but without the cost of hiring a solicitor.

As I stated earlier, there is no reason to employ a person with any legal qualifications at all to write a Will for you. There are, however, various levels of qualification within the legal profession. Some people are lawyers, others are legal practitioners and so on. People can also become legally qualified in preparing Wills. They can join specialist professional bodies who over see them and demand certain standards and provide particular protection for clients. They are commonly known as Will Writers. They charge less than a solicitor but give you a very high standard of service. The best part is that they will meet with you and give you advice. You do not have to fill in forms or worry about the technical side of matters because they are expert in what they do and will create your Will to a very professional standard. You are reassured that it is legally correct.

When Were Hair Straighteners Invented?

This said, one of the first recognised implements used to straighten the hair was called the ‘Straightening Comb’, promoted by Madam C.J Walker an American hair-care manufacturer in the early 1900’s, which looked like a pair of pliers with steel teeth. The implement would be heated on a stove and then pulled through the hair until the heat dispersed; the process would be repeated until all the hair was straightened. From the outset the straightening comb was used by African-Americans, but as time passed its results were sought after by others and new methods and materials were sought after.

Aluminium and steel were used on early straighteners before the invention of the electric hair straightener or hair irons that we all know and love today.

The accolade of creating the first electric iron has been claimed by BaByliss, another globally recognised electrical hair care manufacturer, but the first electrical straightener is shrouded in more mystery. However, it can be assumed that with similar technology the straightener would have been created at a similar time. Initial electric straighteners used simple technology and contained a filament that would heat up surrounding metal plates. These would then be pulled through sections of hair, the problem with these irons were that they didn’t achieve enough heat to give a lasting style which leads us to 2001…

Perhaps the most prolific brand of straighteners are the ghd ceramic hair straighteners, launched in 2001 initially in the UK, by the Yorkshire based, British-owned company. It is claimed that Martin Penny, founder of ghd, was shown some styling irons that he had been sent by a South Korean inventor and suggested he buy the rights. Since then ghd typically turnover more than £115m, and have released a range of high-profile limited edition straighteners, namely their annual Pink Limited Edition straighteners which promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The rest, as they say, is history…or is it?

In a bizarre twist, most hair straighteners are now multi-tasking hair electricals that enable not simply straightening, but curling, creating waves, flicks and crimps too! With fashion changing all the time it’s important that electrical manufacturers stay ahead of the game, which means constantly working to utilise new, inventive techniques, shapes and materials are always entering the market all trying to better ceramic straighteners. So what are the buzz words on the lips of all fashionistas in 2009? Tourmaline and Ionic! And of course to get your gorgeous straightened look you’ll need hair irons that heat up in next to no time!

At Each Moment

There is nothing like joy in coming future
No one seems to be certain or very sure
New names for diseases and no permanent cure
Where to go and who can come to reassure?

God is always there to listen to our woes
Life may always be on sharp edges and keeps us on toe
It needs one right push with one word to go
Life is like foot ball to be played with one throw

Nobody may listen to our complaints
All criminals have reformed and turned saints
All are clad in white cloths and act as wolf
Descent life to live and play pleasure game of golf

We are turned over to wolves
Treachery, deception and something more s also involved
Who will protect us when neglected by guardians?
Fresh flesh is available and eagles are our custodians

How can dream of creating holy land?
When all efforts on for creating it unholy land?
The protectors are turning perpetuators?
The saints are claiming them selves as creators

Anarchy and misery may prevail all over
There will be enough room for them o cover
We will be like animals in circus ring
All prepared songs of praise for us to sing

Either fall in lines with or get out of it and parish
It is sample of reality and may not finish
There world may go on with I and live
We are here to observe and simply believe

All rights and freedom may stand curtailed
All good words said and written may not be availed
The voice may stand muffled and permanently muted
The stratagem and plans may all be silently executed

The days of divine rights of the kings have gone
The new waves of liberty and freedom is shown
It is conveniently suited to their grand evil design
We are not here to oppose but simply agree too and resign

There was provision for kings to abdicate
Money and muscle power here is something to indicate
There is everything to be seen but not to relate
We have absolutely nothing in our hand to state

We must try to free ourselves from the clutch
It may be not be possible for us to reach
We may lack means to counter them and teach
We can certainly compel hem not to breach

There is no use of showing visible outrage

It shows the tendency of lion being caged
Right people at right time must come out and get engaged
Rest will follow automatically and get arranged
